Scout, Amazon's delivery robot, starts delivering parcels after a successful small-scale test. From Monday to Friday, the robot drives around the Irvine region in California. The reason Amazon starts in sunny California is because of the weather. It doesn't rain much and the sun shines a lot, so there's little chance that the robot will have to drive in all weathers to deliver a package. In Seattle, where the robot was tested, it was different.

China is already the world's largest market for industrial robots. As labour costs continue to rise, the demand for robots in the country will be stronger. The country's agricultural sector is seen by some as a place where technologies can take root. A research institute and a startup, Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Fujian Newland Era Hi-Tech Co Ltd, are determined to develop an agricultural robot. The sensor-rich agricultural robot can move between two rows of chlorophyll in a greenhouse, collect data on the plants and return them to the control room. The robot, suitable for 5G, is equipped with two 5 megapixel cameras as "eyes". With sensors at the top of its head and mouth, the robot can also detect wind speeds, carbon dioxide, humidity, temperature and other data about the natural environment of the greenhouse.

MIT’s new mini cheetah robot is springy and light on its feet, with a range of motion that rivals a champion gymnast. The four-legged powerpack can bend and swing its legs wide, enabling it to walk either right-side up or upside down. The robot can also trot over uneven terrain about twice as fast as an average person’s walking speed. Perhaps most impressive is its ability to perform a 360-degree backflip from a standing position. Amazon starts testing an autonomous liver robot near its Seattle home in the northwest of the United States. The "Scout" is a six-wheeled all-electric trolley that reaches just above knee height. The robot has the size of a small cool box and rolls over the pavement at walking speed. Deliveries with the robots will take place from Monday to Friday and only during daylight. The trolleys will autonomously follow a set delivery route, but will initially be accompanied by an Amazon employee. The technology giant ensures that the devices "can safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and any other object in their path".

We have known the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics for some time. Running over inhospitable terrain, a somersault backwards. The makers are one step further, as can be seen in this video. Sophia will be in the Netherlands for the first time on 28 September 2018, because of a leadership congress in Amsterdam. Enough reason for the NOS to speak to her, to see with their own eyes what the hype is about and to find out whether it is justified. The first thing that strikes you when you see Sophia is that she is small. Everyone - big or small - has to bend down a little to be able to look at her. If you look her in the face, there is a good chance that you will get the thought "she looks like someone, but who? That's not a crazy thought: her face is based on that of Audrey Hepburn.

Dubai doesn't shy away from modern technology. For example, the fire brigade has water jet packs to fight fires from the air and the police in Lamborghini drive with crime prevention software. Now the next step is taken: robocops. The Dubai police recently started using the human-like REEM robot, developed by the Spanish company Pal Robotics. However, this RoboCop is less spectacular than the cyborg from the science fiction film of the same name. REEM does not take to the streets heavily armed to track down and eliminate criminals. This robot helps citizens to file a report, pay fines and provide general information.

When asked whether robots could have human consciousness and whether they should have, Sophia did not immediately give clear answers. "Why? Is that bad", she asked evasively? When the question was repeated, Sophia once again answered with a question again.

Honda has announced that it will stop developing Asimo.
