Why a human robot
A humanoid robot has a body shape that resembles that of a human being. Why is that, anyway? Team leader Tomohisa Moridaira: "It is often said that a human form is useful because a robot can use the same tools as humans and can function safely in the same environment. But a more important reason is that people like to operate a robot that looks human. You can easily operate the T-HR3 remotely without training and experience".
Copying movements
T-HR3 copies the movements made by the person operating it remotely, see video. This allows the robot to walk in a natural way, pick up a ball but possibly also perform an operation from a distance.
An additional advantage of this copy function is that the robot can learn quite quickly. Once an operation occurs, the robot can reuse it without the need to program everything in advance.
